How It Works

From a whole index to a ranked shortlist, then from the shortlist to your portfolio.

  1. Pick a Universe

Nifty 50 through Nifty 500, Midcap 150, Smallcap 250, MidSmallcap 400, factor and sector indices, or the S&P 500, NASDAQ 100 and Dow 30. Index membership updates automatically when the index changes.

  2. Rank by Momentum Score

Every stock is scored on its 3, 6 and 9-month returns divided by its 3-month volatility, then sorted highest first. Steady risers beat erratic spikes.

  3. Test It, Then Act

Backtest the rules first. Then check buy/hold/sell signals for what you own, place orders through your broker, or let a monthly auto-rebalance do it for you.

The Strategy

What Is Momentum Investing?

Momentum investing rests on one observation: stocks that have risen steadily over the past several months have tended to keep rising for a while. It is among the most widely documented effects in finance research, in India and across global markets.

Instead of predicting which stock will go up, you buy what is already trending, hold it while the trend lasts, and replace it when something stronger comes along. It is a rules-based approach you can apply to Nifty or US stocks.

Why it has worked, and when it hasn't

  • Behaviour: investors tend to under-react to good news, so trends take time to play out.
  • Flows: large funds build positions over weeks, which sustains price trends.
  • The risk: momentum can reverse sharply when markets turn, and drawdowns can be deep. Backtest the bad years too before you commit money.

Momentum Score Formula

3-Month Return
Captures the recent trend.
6-Month Return
Checks the trend has lasted.
9-Month Return
Rewards longer-run consistency.
Divided by 3-Month Volatility
Penalises erratic stocks, so steady risers rank higher. The score is a plain ratio, typically between 0 and 5.

Everything From Screen to Trade

Research, test and execute a momentum strategy in one place.

  • Momentum Screener

Ranked lists for 20+ Indian and US universes, with each stock's 3, 6 and 9-month return, volatility, score and daily move, so you can see why it ranks where it does.

  • Point-in-Time Backtester

Tests against who was actually in the index at each date, not today's winners projected backwards. Includes costs, dividends, splits and capital-gains tax, and gives every run a data-reliability score.

  • Buy / Hold / Sell Signals

Add the stocks you own and see which still qualify, which have dropped out, and what would replace them. Exit signals are never paywalled.

  • Trade Through Your Broker

Connect a supported broker account and place rebalance orders from the app. Your money stays in your own demat/brokerage account; OneAlpha never holds funds.

  • Monthly Auto-Rebalance

A scheduled monthly rebalance that sells what has dropped out and buys the new leaders in your connected account, with daily loss limits and order reconciliation built in.

  • Technical Screener

Spot resistance breakouts and RSI overbought/oversold readings across a universe, as a second opinion alongside the momentum ranks.

Run the Backtest Yourself

We don't put a headline return on this page. A single number hides the start date, the universe and the bad years. Instead, the backtester lets you pick all three and shows you the full result.

Every run reports:

  • • CAGR, before and after tax
  • • Maximum drawdown
  • • Benchmark CAGR, alpha and beta
  • • Sharpe, Sortino and Calmar
  • • Win rate and turnover
  • • Dividends received
  • • Full equity curve and trade list
  • • Data-reliability warnings

How far back each universe can be tested

Only as far as we have verified historical index membership. Earlier dates would mean survivorship bias, so the backtester refuses them.

Universe Testable from
Nifty 50, Nifty 100, Nifty 500Jun 2005
MidSmallcap 400, Midcap 150, Smallcap 250Apr 2016

US NASDAQ 100Jan 2007

Backtests can span up to 13 years on every plan. Backtested results are hypothetical and are not a promise of future returns.

Frequently Asked Questions

The short answers. Write to us via the contact page for anything else.

What is a momentum screener?
A momentum screener ranks stocks by how strongly and how steadily they have risen. OneAlpha scores every stock in the chosen index as (3-month + 6-month + 9-month return) divided by 3-month volatility, then sorts from highest to lowest, so you can see the strongest trends without analysing hundreds of charts by hand.
Is momentum investing profitable in India?
Momentum is one of the most widely studied return factors, and published research and index data (for example the Nifty 200 Momentum 30 index) show it has beaten broad Indian indices over several long periods. It has also had deep drawdowns and sharp reversals, and there is no guarantee it will work in future. Use the backtester to see how it behaved on the universe and dates you care about, including the bad years.
Which markets and stocks are covered?
Indian (NSE) stocks across 17 Nifty universes, including Nifty 50, Next 50, 100, 200, 500, Midcap 150, Smallcap 250, MidSmallcap 400, LargeMidcap 250, factor indices and sector indices; and US stocks in the S&P 500, NASDAQ 100, Dow 30 and a US mega-cap list. Index membership is refreshed automatically when the index provider announces changes.
How often is the data updated?
Prices and momentum scores refresh every trading day after market close. The momentum strategy rebalances monthly by default; in the backtester you can test other rebalance frequencies.
How far back can I backtest?
Backtests use historical index membership rather than today's list projected backwards, so each universe can only be tested as far back as its membership history is reliable: Nifty 50, 100 and 500 from June 2005; MidSmallcap 400, Midcap 150 and Smallcap 250 from April 2016; Dow 30 from 1990, NASDAQ 100 from 2007 and S&P 500 from 2011. Universes without researched history are only testable from October 2026 onwards.
Is OneAlpha investment advice?
No. OneAlpha is a research and analytics tool and is not registered with SEBI as an investment adviser or research analyst. Rankings and backtests are produced mechanically by a published formula. You decide what to buy or sell; consider consulting a SEBI-registered adviser.
